The Shape Beneath
The Shape Beneath is an original painting on a reclaimed antique Ebony wood hand mirror by UK wildlife and nature artist Liisa Clark.
On the reverse of the mirror, a human skull slowly emerges from a soft atmospheric background. When the mirror is held in the hand, the viewer moves between their own reflection and the skull, turning the object back and forth between appearance and underlying structure.
Rather than presenting mortality as something fearful, the work quietly acknowledges a universal truth: beneath every face lies the same form. The skull becomes not a warning, but a reminder of the shared structure that connects all human lives.
Inspired by the historical memento mori tradition, the piece reflects on impermanence, reflection and the quiet presence of time.
By painting onto a reclaimed antique mirror, the artwork transforms a domestic object into a contemplative symbolic artwork that exists somewhere between painting and object. The mirror becomes both surface and participant, inviting the viewer to encounter themselves before meeting the skull beneath.
This one-of-a-kind artwork is part of Liisa Clark’s ongoing exploration of nature, mortality and reclaimed objects, where forgotten tools and domestic items are reimagined as symbolic artworks.
