The Tool Rests, the Earth Reclaims
The Tool Rests, the Earth Reclaims is an original oil painting on a reclaimed antique hand saw by UK nature artist Liisa Clark.
A sheep skull rests along the blade of the saw, entwined with trailing ivy. The skull itself was discovered by a friend, while the ivy was gathered from the artist’s own garden, bringing together elements of landscape and memory.
The piece reflects on the moment when objects have finished their purpose. Tools that once served human labour are eventually left behind, and slowly the landscape absorbs them again.
Through the imagery of skull and ivy the artwork draws on the memento mori tradition, where symbols of mortality are used not to inspire fear, but to remind us of the natural cycles that connect all living things.
Painted directly onto the metal blade of a vintage saw, the piece transforms an everyday utilitarian object into a quiet meditation on time, nature and return.
This reclaimed artwork sits between painting and object, carrying both the history of the tool and the symbolism of the imagery.
