Memento Mori Series – ‘What Meets Your Gaze’

‘What Meets your Gaze’ is an original oil painting on an antique hand mirror by UK wildlife artist Liisa Clark.

The back of the mirror reveals a coiled python, its head emerging from the centre of its body and looking directly outward. Snakes have long symbolised transformation, renewal and rebirth through the shedding of their skins.

The mirror invites an intimate interaction. When held, the viewer sees their own reflection on one side before turning the mirror to encounter the snake. The act of turning becomes a quiet moment of reflection, linking identity, change and transformation.

Despite their reputation, many large snakes are calm and curious animals. The python here is painted with presence rather than aggression, emphasising the symbolism of growth and becoming.

By painting onto a reclaimed antique mirror, the artwork becomes both object and image, transforming a domestic item into a contemplative symbolic artwork.

This artwork also echoes elements of the memento mori tradition, gently acknowledging cycles of life, transformation and renewal.

An unusual and thought-provoking piece for collectors interested in wildlife art, symbolism and reclaimed materials.
